Large Cranial Defect

Case presented by Dr. H. Bijvoet from Dijkzigt Ziekenhuis Rotterdam and Dr. J.K.Th. Haex from Dijkzigt Ziekenhuis Rotterdam - Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht, The Netherlands.

a. Cranioplasty is a technique to design customised implants for patients missing parts of their skull to protect their brain from possible impacts.

b. With the model, the surgeon has all the information to give some plastic deformable wax material the desired shape of the prosthesis.

c. When the wax prosthesis is formed, a direct implantable prosthesis in a bio-compatible material such as polymethyl-methacrylate (shortly PMMA) is cast.

d. After sterilization, the prosthesis is ready to be implanted. The surgery takes almost no time, since all the preparation has been done beforehand and the result is much more aesthetic and more comfortable for the patient than could ever be achieved by conventional impression techniques.

e. The prosthesis fits exactly in the defect of the patient's skull and gives his skull a very symmetric outline. A good fit is not only important for a symmetric look of the patient's face but also to prevent the implant from damaging skin or brain tissue.
